seechainsaw: (Comfortable)

Giriko stepped out of the airport into the heavy Brazilian heat and slipped on a pair of aviator sunglasses as he glanced around. He had left behind his heavy coat and gloves, of course, wearing a safari shirt and a pair of jeans over his shitkicker boots. Even that was fucking hot, but they were going into the jungle and he didn't want to get stung by anything nasty while he was out there. Crocodiles he could handle, but mosquitos pissed him off.

A man wearing a head-to-foot black cloak and a skull-like mask drove up in a jeep. "Ready to go, Giriko-sama?" the man asked. He was likely sweating like crazy in that thing.

"Yeah, just a sec," Giriko said. "I'm waitin' for someone."

He was curious whether Henry would try to kill him again.

About five minutes later, Henry showed up almost seemingly out of nowhere. His usual clothes were not suited for this heat and wore a fitted long-sleeved shirt and khakis, which were tucked into a pair of high boots. A pair of sunglasses were hung around the neck of his shirt. Around his waist was a belt of some kind that held his weapon and a small pouch. He didn't feel comfortable without a weapon and some bug repellent.

"I 'ad to get seven different shots for this trip," Henry said as he approached Giriko. "What's this all about again?"

Giriko didn't mind Henry carrying a weapon - had expected it, in fact, and he grinned when the other man showed up.

"Quit your bitchin' and get in," he said, jumping into the back seat of the jeep and sliding over on the bench to give Henry room to sit. "I'll explain on the way."

Giriko grinned toothily over at Henry, pleased that the assassin was behaving himself instead of doing something stupid. He leaned back himself, spreading one arm across the back of the bench seat - and therefore behind Henry.

"Meet my driver, uh... his name ain't important," he said with a wave of his hand. "He's a member of Arachnophobia, like me. We got a device out in the jungle I gotta make some adjustments to. It amplifies the madness wave that's already spreadin' through the world, driving everyone crazy. We've got a bunch of 'em, all over the world."

"Madness waves? What's the bloody point of that?"

Henry merely gave the arm intruding into his personal space a brief sideways glance, then looked forward again.

Giriko gestured vaguely. He couldn't blame Henry for being ignorant, since he wasn't from this world, so he figured it was easier just to explain.

"There's this guy, the Kishin. He's an asshole and completely fucking insane. Like, really, really fucking insane. So insane that he makes people insane just bein' around him. Like there's this wave of madness that comes out of him, and makes people see shit and go nuts. That's the madness wave," he explained.

"Arachnophobia's using it for our own purposes, yeah? Because we stand for anarchy and the witches can use the madness to make new monsters and shit. We don't want laws and do-gooder Shibusen holding us back from doing whatever the hell we want, so we're using the madness wave to break that kind of thing down, break down society." He grinned eagerly. "It'll all go to hell, sooner or later."

Henry had a disinterested look on his face, but the information was fascinating and strange to him. At some points, Henry was tempted to laugh but decided it would be best to take the matter as seriously as his "companion" was.

"Ah, yes, I can imagine that would be home sweet hom for someone like ye'," Henry said, turning to face him. "So this Madness Wave... would I feel it, too?"

Giriko's eyebrows rose and he grinned. He knew it sounded fucking retarded, but he didn't really care. It was serious, and Henry would figure it out soon enough.

"Sure you will, if ya stay here long enough," he said. "Depends on how bad it affects you. It hadn't really started affecting too many people yet, except people who are already nutters."

He pointed in the direction they were headed, at a huge beam of red and black light that crackled into the sky, lighting the clouds up a sick and twisted crimson. It looked...shivery, like it might drive one mad just to look at it. "There's our booster, right over there."

The ominous tower of red and black sent a shiver down his spine. It was strange how he didn't notice its presence until now, and felt slightly foolish about his earlier light-hearted statements.

"That's inconspicious," Henry muttered, glaring through his shades. "What about you, then? I think you're rather nutters."

As the jeep grew closer, he felt more and more uneasy. He was prone to chatter when he was nervous.

omg, I fail

Giriko laughed. "Yeah, fuck, who knows? Maybe I am nuts, too. But I ain't hallucinating or acting weird. This is just the way I am."

At least, so far as he could tell.

The jeep came out of the trees to a more open area. Ahead of them was a kind of pyramid built of stone standing in the middle of the forest, the beam of perverted light erupting from its apex. Golems stood around it, patrolling or simply standing watch.

"So what do ya think so far?" Giriko asked, grinning sidelong at his companion.

hahaha

Henry whistled as they drew nearer, admiring the piece of work. The earlier feeling of dread was overpowered by one of awe, but it didn't make him feel any more relaxed.

"It's uh, impressive to say the least," he replied. "Can't say I see this kinda' shit everyday. Are ye' plannin' on going in there or something?"

He gestured to the pyramid.

"Course!" Giriko said, grabbing a huge canvas bag that clanked out of the back and jumping down, throwing the back onto his shoulder. "Grab that other bag, will ya? Unless you're too much of a pussy and want to stay inside."

Inside the bag were the tools of his trade, though it was impossible to tell from the outside.

Henry bristled at the last comment and grabbed the bag Giriko mentioned. It was heavier than it looked, but he jumped out of the jeep with ease.

"Never," he replied with a huff. "Let's just get this over with, shall we?"

Giriko beamed at the other man and led the way into the pyramid. The doors slid open when he touched a hand to a panel outside, and they entered a cool, dimly lit space inside.

In the centre of the space was an enormous machine. At least, it looked like a machine. Dials were waving madly and it was chugging along, emitting the occasional puff of steam or mechanical groan. Out of the top of it came a forest of cables, all of them glowing red and black.

Giriko knelt beside the machine and opened a panel, unzipped the canvas bag he held and pulled out a wrench. He rummaged inside, then gestured to Henry. "You got my alchemy gloves. Give 'em here?"

Henry followed the man in, ignoring the happy look on his face. He didn't even really have time to sulk about it once they got inside because the sight was even stranger than the outside. He opened the bag and took out a familiar pair of long brown gloves and tossed them on the ground next to Giriko.

"'ere," he said, and went back to circling around the machine.

Giriko pulled the gloves on, grabbed the wrench and got to work. This involved sticking the wrench into the guts of the machine and feeling around, while simultaneously pressing his palm to the outside surface. The hand on the outside began to glow, and the machine writhed with a scream of what sounded like distress.

"Yeah, yeah," Giriko muttered to himself. "I know, baby. You been needin' some love, huh?"

Henry flinched at the horrible noise. He decided to stop wandering around and ended up circling back to where Giriko was mumbling to the machine and stood back a few feet to watch. He had to admit: it was interesting to see how the man was fixing this thing with just a wrench and a glowing glove.

He was silent the entire time, moving only to wipe the sweat off his forehead. It was cooler in here by a lot, but still too warm for him. Occasionally, he caught himself craning his neck to try and see inside the machine and what Giriko was actually doing to it, but restrained his curiosity. He was still not comfortable around this thing nor was he particularly interested in how it actually worked.

I feel your pain

Giriko was sweating, too, even more than Henry. There was obviously effort in what he was doing, as he shifted his hand around on the surface of the machine and the tenor of the machine's noises changed.

Slowly, gradually, the screams quieted to atonal humming, almost like a contented - but insane - feline. The puffs of steam abated, and the thrumming calmed to a whisper.

Giriko sat back and wiped his brow, shoving the panel back into place with one boot. "Fucking piece of crap," he said affectionately. "Needed recalibratin'."

He looked up at Henry with a self-satisfied grin. "The Demon Tools are genius, but they're so fuckin' delicate. It's a pain in the ass to get them just right. Guess you ain't much into machines, right?"

From: [identity profile] wearecowboys.livejournal.com
Henry shrugged and ventured closer to the machine now that it was properly fixed. He brushed his fingers gently against the metal.

"Aye, I can fix a couple of things or two, if it's not too complicated," he said. "But the most work I've ever done on a complicated machine was probably slice it in half." He smirked to himself at the memory of Letz Shake.

Giriko snickered. "Sometimes that's the only way to fix somethin'." He got to his feet and thumped the machine affectionately on the side. It wasn't often that he had the chance to work on something so...magical.

"Guess there's no such thing as magic or alchemy in your world, huh?" he asked, real curiosity in his eyes as he looked at Henry.

From: [identity profile] wearecowboys.livejournal.com
"Depends what ye' mean by magic, but definitely no alchemy, so far." Henry mused, tapping his chin. He wasn't sure if some of the abilities that people had in his world was considered 'magic' or not, but they could get pretty unrealistic sometimes.

"So, we done 'ere or what?"

From: [identity profile] seechainsaw.livejournal.com
"Yeah, we're done here," Giriko said. He'd been waiting a few moments to make sure his changes had held, but the machine was still humming away happily. "Better get outta here before you start hallucinating, huh?"

He grinned, but he was completely serious. Such close proximity to the madness wave wasn't exactly good for people's sanity.

"So is there magic where ya come from or not?" he asked as he headed towards the door. "What do you mean about the 'definition'?"

From: [identity profile] wearecowboys.livejournal.com
Henry just rolled his eyes. He knew in his gut what the machine was capable of just by instincts alone, but whether he was right or wrong, he was just that confident in his own abilities. Or maybe he was just crazy.

"People can do strange things," he said, grabbing a bag and following alongside Giriko. "It's an ability, or something they were just born with, or something so technologically absurd that it seems like make-believe. For instance, laser beam cannons. To you, it might not be anything special, but in our world, that's just silly. Nobody owns something like that."

After what Henry had experienced from the community alone, all of the strange encounters he had in Santa Destroy were practically everyday things.

"You mean like your cute little sword?" Giriko asked, gesturing towards the hilt on Henry's belt. "Looks like somethin' out of a Star Wars movie. Is that like magic to you?"

From: [identity profile] wearecowboys.livejournal.com
Henry patted his sword with a smile, appreciating the sci-fi reference. Not many people he ran into in the community knew what Star Wars was.

"Well, to me, it's the closest I can get," he replied. "But it's not that much, especially compared to you turning into a chainsaw and your alchemy."

He knew it sounded too nice coming from him, but it was the truth.

From: [identity profile] seechainsaw.livejournal.com
Giriko nodded. Magic was pretty common in his world, even if most normal people didn't know much about it. "Yeah, it ain't much," he agreed with a shrug. "It's a nice weapon, though."

That sounded too nice coming from Giriko, too, but he was in a pretty damn good mood right about now, and inclined to be magnanimous.

He climbed into the jeep, throwing his bag in the back in a jingle of tools, and leaned back with his arms across the back bench once more.

Once they were back out in the Brazilian heat, Henry put the shades back on and hopped into the jeep as well. He grimaced and rubbed at an itch forming on his neck, despite having been covered in repellent the entire day. Other than that, this trip wasn't as bad as he expected it.

"Ye' know, I'll be honest with ye," he said, leaning back comfortably. "I was tempted to attack ye back in there."

He pulled down at his shades and stared at the once-again space intruding arm. He even threw in a thin smile. It didn't look entirely friendly, but bitter, as if he regretted not trying.

Giriko glanced back at him, his lips spread in a grin. "Oh yeah?" he asked, not surprised one bit. "Then why didn't ya?"
